Your Own AI Model
Run open models on your computer, answer questions from your own documents and tune a model to your style. No data leaves your machine.
Who it is for
- Teams that cannot send documents to a cloud AI
- Developers who want to understand models, not only call them
- Anyone with a laptop with 16 GB of RAM
What you will have at the end
- A local model that runs without internet
- Search and answers over your own documents (RAG)
- A small fine-tune and a test set to check it
You pick a model that fits your hardware, run it locally and connect it to your files: contracts, notes, a knowledge base. Then you measure whether the answers are actually right, and tune the model when they are not. You finish with a private assistant that knows your documents.

How to run your own AI on a laptop
Install a model runner such as Ollama, download an open model sized for your memory (a 7 to 8 billion parameter model fits in 16 GB of RAM) and start chatting. It works offline, and your data never leaves the computer.
→RAG: how AI answers from your documents
RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) means the AI first finds the relevant pieces of your documents and only then writes an answer from them. The model does not need to be retrained, and you can see which document each answer came from.
→Course questions
Do I need a GPU?
No. Small models run on a modern laptop CPU. A GPU makes them faster, and the course shows both.
Is a local model as good as ChatGPT?
For general chat, no. For answering from your own documents, often yes, because it reads exactly your files.
